Woman wanted sex the night of alleged rape - defence

A 63-year-old woman who claimed she was raped by a Northland policeman 19 years ago was out for sex, the accused man's lawyer told a jury today. Gary Gotlieb said he would call evidence from a man who said the woman at the centre of the historic rape allegation wanted sex the night she claimed the policeman handcuffed and raped her in a Northland police station. The woman said she was driving the policeman, 44, home after a Saturday night at a Northland hotel in Mach, 1988, when she was raped. The accused man, who cannot be named, faces eight charges, including four of sexual violation by rape. Mr Gotlieb told a jury in Auckland District Court today that five defence witnesses would be called. He said one witness, Les Gardener, was expected to tell the court the woman suggested sex with him earlier in the evening, before she was allegedly raped by the policeman.
