Nicole, mom walk out of rape hearing

YESTERDAYS HEARING of the Subic rape case was to start in a few minutes and the regular court audience was settling in when Nicole and her mother suddenly rose from their seats, walked out of Makati Regional Trial Court Branch 139, and hurriedly left the building. Surrounded by her mother and sympathizers, the 22-year-old Filipino woman who has charged four US Marines with rape left in a huff five minutes before 1 p.m., when the trial was set to resume. Before boarding a taxi, Nicoles mother angrily said in a mix of Filipino and English that they considered the state prosecutors handling the case to be incompetent. The mother said the same thing in a later text message: We walked out because we are not satisfied [with] the public prosecutors because they are incompetent.
