Privacy laws scrutinized in rape case
A two-month delay in the reporting of a February sexual assault on the Adelphi University campus stemmed from the victim's initial decision not to notify police, the university said, adding that federal law does not require schools to contact local authorities. Det. Sgt. Richard Zito of the Nassau Special Victims Squad said last week that though the college had no legal obligation to contact police, he expressed concern that the delay complicated the police investigation. He noted that police had to subpoena the university to obtain records in the case. .
