Officers warn of date rape
The fall semester has the largest percentage of sexual abuse and alcohol-related incidents on campus, they say, this should make students think twice before venturing into a dark alley alone. According to the sexual assault prevention and education Web site for WVU, two to three women call each week after they have been sexually assaulted in Morgantown. "The first six to eight weeks anyone is on campus, especially freshmen, is the time they are most vulnerable to these types of attacks," says Deb Strouse a National certified counselor and Sexual Assault Prevention Educator and Response Coordinator at WVU. According to a USA Today survey, there is a sexual assault on a U.S. college campus, every 21 hours. Commonly freshmen experiment with alcohol, which is why crimes like this tend to perpetuate, Strouse said.
