Japanese women, unionists back Subic rape complainant

REPRESENTATIVES of a Japanese womens group and a Japanese trade union were at Tuesdays court hearing of the Subic rape case and told INQ7.net through an interpreter that they support the private complainant in this case. Masayo Niwa, board member of the Asia-Japan Womens Resource Center, said that aside from making personal financial contributions to logistics for the prosecution of the four American soldiers accused in the case, she is also here to network with Philippine womens organizations against US bases around the world. Niwa said her organization is against not only against American military aggression, but also her own countrys history of military sexual slavery. She said her group has helped Filipino comfort women in their campaign for justice. Comfort women is the term given to women forcibly used by Japanese soldiers for sex in the countries they occupied during World War II.
