Freed rapist given boot

It's been more than 11 years, but an Ethiopian refugee convicted of raping and sodomizing two 15-year-old girls in Calgary has finally been kicked out of Canada. Yohannes Mehari Mircha, 46, was deported Wednesday. "He is permanently barred from returning to Canada," said Canada Border Services Agency spokeswoman Lisa White. One of Mircha's victims, now 27, said it's a relief to know he's finally gone. "It was so scary for me to think that I could be walking down the street and just bump into him," said the woman whose identity is protected. "Sometimes I felt like the system was more protective of him than me." Mircha arrived in Calgary as a refugee from Ethiopia in 1989. In 1994, he befriended a 15-year-old girl and brought her back to his place where videotaped himself raping and sodomizing her.
