Date-rape drug found in mail
AUTHORITIES have raided a suburban unit after the discovery in the mail of a chemical used to make the date-rape drug fantasy. The chemical, contained in a plastic screw-top bottle labelled as cleaning fluid, had been posted from the United Kingdom to an Adelaide address, the Australian Customs Service said. The fluid was gammabutyrolactone, or GBL, which can either be used as a drug itself or as a precursor to make the illicit drug gamma-hydroxybutyrate, commonly known as fantasy. Police and Customs officials today raided the Walkerville unit and seized computer equipment and other items. A 27-year-old man was interviewed over the alleged importation of the drug and Customs said charges were expected to be laid soon. The maximum penalty for importing such drugs is 25 years' jail and a $550,000 fine.
