Rapist's funeral trip sets off anger

A TASMANIAN man wrongly accused of murdering his mother says authorities should have let him out of prison to go to her funeral. Phillip Wilson, 54, of Kingston, says it is unfair that Tasmania's worst serial rapist, Shane Farmer, was allowed travel interstate to his father's funeral earlier this week. "There should be an all-or-none policy in the prisons," Mr Wilson said. "Either all prisoners should be allowed to go to a parent's funeral or none of them should." He spent seven months in Risdon Prison awaiting trial for murdering his mother Betty, 74, in their Blackmans Bay home in February 2003 but the charge was dropped by the Director of Public Prosecutions. "I wasn't allowed to go to Mum's funeral," he said. .
