Artist walks free as date-rape charges fail

Artist Para Matchitt has walked free from a Napier court after a judge dismissed charges relating to a woman who alleged he date-raped her. Justice Forrie Miller discharged the 73-year-old on charges of rape, sexual violation by unlawful sexual connection and indecent assault of the 29-year-old complainant at her Hastings home on October 10. In 2001, Matchitt was sentenced to 2-1/2 years' jail after being convicted of sexually violating a Hawke's Bay girl aged 16. His lawyer Adam Couchman said yesterday that previous conviction meant his client had been unfairly treated when the new allegations emerged. Matchitt had been scheduled to face the new charges relating to the Hastings woman at a three-day jury trial beginning today.
