Doctor freed of rape charge

DR Matt Myrie, the gynaecologist charged with the rape and indecent assault of a female patient at the Victoria Jubilee Hospital, was yesterday acquitted of all charges by a seven-member jury in the Supreme Court. After deliberating for approximately one hour and 15 minutes, the jury returned the verdict that Myrie was not guilty of two counts of rape and two counts of indecent assault, bringing a conclusion to the 15-day trial. Heartened by the verdict, Myrie immediately burst into tears of relief. Myrie, who was represented by attorneys-at-law Jacqueline Samuels-Brown and Bert Samuels, was accused of raping and performing oral sex on the patient at the Victoria Jubilee Hospital on February 12, 2005 in the hospital's ultrasound room. Police said that the incident occurred two days after the complainant suffered a miscarriage, and that two condoms and a pair of underwear allegedly belonging to Myrie had been seized for DNA testing some time afterwards.
